Investing Over £1Million in Precision Machining

Fast-evolving engineering company Power Jacks has invested more than £1million in new equipment in order to meet growing global demand for its products and services including the oil and gas sector.

The Ellon based company has taken delivery of three, state-of-the-art Doosan CNC (computer numerical control) machine tools to address customer needs for both its core products and precision machining services.

Power Jacks specialises in producing world-class industrial lifting and positioning equipment including screw jacks, actuators & lead screws.

Bruce Bultitude, chairman and managing director at Power Jacks, said: “The machines will be particularly pivotal to servicing the oil and gas sector where we are experiencing an increasingly growing demand for our core electro-mechanical products. What we are seeing is a sharp shift in the industry moving away from hydraulic methods of lifting and positioning of high loads. We believe this is because the end users are recognising the benefits of electro-mechanical solutions which can offer safer, maintenance free and more environmentally-friendly solutions.”

The Doosan CNC machine tools are next generation and further enhance our purpose-built engineering and manufacturing facilities. They have the most advanced high definition and high speed capabilities combined with a powerful weight capacity which enables us to deliver best-in-class products to bigger projects more time and cost effectively. Bruce Bultitude

Currently being commissioned at the company’s headquarters in Ellon, with the aim of being operational by mid-June, Power Jacks’ new Doosan cell includes a large vertical turning centre, a large capacity lathe and a new machining centre to compliment Power Jacks’ already extensive manufacturing machining capability. Power Jacks’ improved capability allows the company to engineer even larger industrial worm gear screw jacks and actuators for lifting and positioning applications and also perform larger products for its oil and gas customers, such as valve bodies, tubing hangers, bonnets and flange faces up to 10 tonnes and 2 metre diameter.

Earlier this year, in order to meet growing demand for its products and services, particularly in oil and gas, the company reinforced its senior management team with Keith Mackie taking up the newly-created role of deputy managing director and Ian Porter being appointed operations director.

Power Jacks’ market activity spans more than 70 countries and a diverse range of industries from aerospace, defence and industrial auto-motion solutions to civil engineering and energy including renewables, and oil & gas. For more information about Power Jacks, please visit: www.powerjacks.com

The company has also bolstered its senior management team in order to meet growing global demand for its products and services, particularly in the oil and gas sector.

Keith Mackie takes up the newly-created role of deputy managing director while Ian Porter has been appointed operations director. Both bring extensive operational oil & gas expertise with Keith joining Power Jacks from Cosalt Offshore and Ian having previously worked for GE.

Power Jacks, which is headquartered in Ellon, Aberdeenshire, specialises in producing world-class industrial lifting and positioning equipment including screw jacks, actuators & lead screws.

“To attract two high-calibre people as Keith and Ian to Power Jacks is a significant endorsement of the business success and key to our plans for continued growth. The company invested in a state-of-the-art, purpose-built manufacturing facility at Ellon and within three years, we are already starting to reap the rewards with plans to expand further over the next three to five years.” Bruce Bultitude

Bruce Bultitude, chairman and managing director at Power Jacks, said: “We are expanding across a number of industries with a particular focus on the subsea and topside sectors of the oil & gas industry where we are experiencing a sharp increase in activity for our core electro-mechanical products. There would appear to be a step-change in the industry to move away from hydraulic to electro-mechanical solutions which can offer safer, maintenance free and more environmentally-friendly solutions for lifting and positioning of high loads. “Strengthening our management team is a key part of our strategy for sustained growth with Keith and Ian each having a key role to play in further driving forward our international business operations. Together, they have an impressive track record in operational experience in oil & gas services which, combined, spans more than 60 years.”

Formerly operations director at Cosalt Offshore, Mr Mackie was responsible for overseeing the scheduling, management and delivery of operations, with a focus on ensuring quality management of safe, efficient and timely operations across the company’s range of integrated lifting services.

Prior to this, Mr Mackie held senior positions with Fisher Offshore Ltd, Stats Group (UK) Ltd, International Paper (UK) Ltd. & WYKO. Mr Porter was formerly oil & gas subsea manufacturing executive at GE where he led the company’s global manufacturing operations including its subsea trees and controls. With more than 35 years of manufacturing and operational experience, the last 22 have been with GE various divisions including GE Oil & Gas, GE Energy and GE Aviation.

Power Jacks’ market activity spans more than 70 countries and a diverse range of industries from aerospace, defence and industrial auto-motion solutions to civil engineering and energy including renewable, oil & gas.

Among the company’s high-profile portfolio of more than 5,000 clients are blue chip companies such as Airbus, BAE, Cadbury, Diageo, Ferrari & Red Bull Racing, Glaxo, ICI, Rolls Royce, Unilever, and major oil and gas companies.

Over the last 20 years, the company has also trained more than 50 apprentices in mechanical and machinery disciplines ranging from assembly to electrical while it currently has five apprentices under its training wing with plans to recruit up to three new apprentices each year.

New Ellon Headquarters open for business

New Ellon Headquarters open for business

Power Jacks is entering a new era as we complete the move to our new headquarters.

The transfer process has already been actively under way for several weeks but Monday will represent the business’ first official day of operations at the new Balmacassie site Ellon headquarters. The relocation to the large, modern, purpose-built headquarters has been driven by our commitment to realise our global growth potential in the long-term.

Managing Director Bruce Bultitude says: “We are of course sad to be moving away from Fraserburgh, where our company has such long-standing and deep-rooted connections. However our facility there was, in truth, compromising our growth objectives in the modernday international business environment.

“As a progressive, forward-looking enterprise, we had to create a new complex that would allow us to enhance our operational capabilities for our customers around the world - and we have done so at Balmacassie. “Our new geographical location will also, crucially, give us access to new skills pools, helping us to overcome the recruitment issues we have faced in recent years.

“Having said that, it is fantastic that all of our Fraserburgh personnel will remain part of the Power Jacks success story by continuing with us. The commitment and support of our staff have been absolutely pivotal to the efficient execution of the relocation project.

“I want to pay tribute to everyone associated with the move - including those who have managed and co-ordinated the exercise, and our staff project team - for serving to turn our ambitions into reality. “These are exciting times for everyone associated with Power Jacks. I look forward to engaging with as many of our stakeholders as possible - staff, customers, distributors and suppliers - over the coming months to ensure we can all enjoy the greatest possible benefits from this new era.”

The new Ellon facility consists of a manufacturing and assembly facility with associated warehousing, and office space to accommodate the design and production engineering, sales, marketing and administration functions.

*A series of open days at Balmacassie is being planned for customers, distributors and other interested parties - details will be confirmed in the near future.

Safety Accolade for Power Jacks

Leading manufacturer of linear motion and mechanical power transmission equipment, Power Jacks, has received formal industry acknowledgment of its operational safety performance.

The business – based in Ellon, Scotland – has been presented with a Safety Award by the support and lobbying organisation Scottish Engineering, which boasts around 400 member companies across the country covering all sectors of the manufacturing industry.

Power Jacks’ HR and Training Manager Hazel Cummine accepted the award on behalf of the company during a visit by John Thomson of Scottish Engineering.

“We were delighted to receive this recognition of the excellent safety performance achieved across our operations in 2010, when we recorded no lost time accidents,” she says.

“We place enormous emphasis upon safety in everything we do, and it will always remain at the top of our operational agenda.

“The award is first and foremost a tribute to the efforts of our workforce, who deliver consistently excellent results for our customers in a working environment shaped by safety and quality considerations.”

Power Jacks is a member company of Scottish Engineering, a non-profit making organisation. The business relocated its operations to new purpose-built facilities in Ellon earlier this year, to support its growth objectives. The new premises feature a manufacturing and assembly facility with associated warehousing, and office space to accommodate the design and production engineering, sales, marketing and administration functions.

In recent months the company has been honoured with a Queen’s Award for Enterprise for International Trade.

First Minister hails Power Jacks' global success as 'way forward for Scottish firms.'

The First Minister today said that Aberdeenshire company Power Jacks’ global success was ‘contributing significantly to the Scottish export industry’ and should lead the way for other firms in this country.

The Rt Hon Alex Salmond officially opened Power Jacks’ new headquarters and manufacturing facility which has been purpose-built to meet the company’s rapid global growth.

He said: “I am absolutely thrilled to be opening the new Power Jacks headquarters in Ellon - right in the heart of my parliamentary constituency in Aberdeenshire.

“It is fabulous to see a Scottish manufacturing company that has its origins in 1903 and was established in its present form in 1987, continue not just to thrive, but expand, develop and grow. That much is clear when you look around the excellent workshop and offices that the company now calls home.

“The engineering work done by Power Jacks is highly skilled, and serves clients in more than 60 countries across the world, contributing significantly to the Scottish export industry. And as we develop Scotland’s potential in renewable energy and manufacturing over the next decade, Power Jacks’ success should point the way for other firms in this country.”

Award-winning company Power Jacks specialises in producing world-beating industrial lifting and positioning equipment including screw jacks, gear boxes, actuators and planetary roller screws.

Power Jacks’ significant expansion — which saw the company honoured with a Queen’s Award for Business Enterprise in 2010 - resulted in the company moving into its next generation business complex at Ellon’s Balmacassie Commercial Park as it marked its 24th year in business.

The energy efficient facility features an impressive manufacturing and assembly facility with associated warehousing. Office space, which boasts the latest heating, lighting and communications technology, will accommodate the design and production, engineering, sales, marketing and administration teams.

Managing Director Bruce Bultitude said: “Power Jacks is entering an exciting new era and as a progressive, forward-thinking enterprise, we have consolidated our position for future growth. Our new headquarters will significantly enhance our operations around the world and underpins our commitment to the north-east of Scotland where our engineering heritage dates back to 1903.

“All of Power Jacks’ manufacturing is done on-site in the north-east, ensuring the highest standards of technical expertise and that the latest technologies and innovations are utilised, to the benefit of our customers. We are also investing in the next generation of engineers through our long-established apprenticeship scheme with Banff and Buchan College to ensure our global-leading position for the future of Power Jacks and that of the region.

“It is therefore a particular privilege for the Power Jacks team to have attracted the First Minister to officially open our new headquarters. As a tremendous advocate of Scotland’s manufacturing and export capabilities, who is actively tackling the skills shortage issue, the First Minister is the most fitting figure to launch Power Jacks into its new era.”

The Lord Lieutenant of Aberdeenshire, James Ingleby, was also at the Power Jacks opening ceremony, where he officially presented Mr Bultitude with the company’s Queen’s Award.

Key to Power Jacks’ success is the company’s global marketing capabilities which include a wholly-owned subsidiary sales office in Shanghai, more than 25 international distributors in Europe, Africa, Asia and Australasia, an interactive website and presence at international trade events.

Power Jacks’ market activity spans more than 5,000 clients in more than 60 countries and across a diverse range of industries with its high-profile portfolio of clients include blue chip companies Airbus, BAE, Cadbury, Diageo, Ferrari & Red Bull Racing, Glaxo, ICI, Rolls Royce, Unilever.

Over the last 20 years, the company has also trained more than 50 apprentices in mechanical and machinery disciplines ranging from assembly to electrical.

It is the only company in the UK and one of only around six in the world which boasts a thread grinding capability for manufacturing planetary roller screws. These products provide a cleaner, quieter and more environmentally-friendly mechanical alternative to hydraulic solutions. One particular application is on Suspension Parameter Measurement Machines and as a result, Power Jacks products have been exported to Toyota, Honda, Mazda, Mitsibushi, & Chrysler.
